Online High School to Remain Open

The new owners of Bellevue-based Insight School of Washington said Monday night that the school will remain open.

On Friday afternoon, the state Employment Security Department noted on its website that Insight Schools had issued layoff notices to 168 employees, effective July 18.

Such notices are standard when a company is bought, and that’s the case with this layoff notice, said Jeff Kwitowski, vice president of public affairs for K12 Inc. K12 recently bought the kindergarten-12th grade assets of Kaplan Virtual Education, which included Insight Schools.

Online education can open a new world

It’s an Insight School of Washington commercial that shows the teen girl at work. Kaplan High School, also running TV ads, is part of Kaplan, Inc., an education business that’s a division of The Washington Post Co., which owns The Herald.

Another online school, iQ Academy Washington, recently held an open house in Snohomish County. The iQ Academy offers both middle school and high school, starting with sixth grade.

With all these choices, it’s not hard to imagine conversations between teens tired of getting up early and parents stressed by jobs and school-related activities. Online? It sounds like just the fix for overscheduled families.

Online Courses Offer Options, Support for Homeschooling Families

As more and more families seek alternatives to traditional school, we’re seeing an increase in students blending homeschool and online education. Every family and situation is different, but regardless of the circumstance, a tough decision has to be made when homeschooled students enter their high school years. In the past, the choices have typically been a) continue homeschooling through high school or b) start at/return to a traditional brick & mortar school.

Now, thanks to public online schools, like Insight Schools, families have a choice that offers different options for student-centered learning that didn’t exist just a few years ago – eliminating the either/or choice of the past. Insight Schools and other online education providers are allowing students to enroll full-time as well as part-time. A full-time option allows students to take a full course-load in the environment they’re accustomed to and still have their parent by their side, while part-time enrollment gives them the option of taking a class or two while still receiving instruction from their parents for their remaining courses.

Sequim man uses Internet to instruct at online school — anywhere

He has taught from remote parts, such as Southern Utah’s Grand Staircase-Escalante, and has found that mountaintops “work pretty well” for online satellite links.

He said he typically gets online first thing in the morning for about two hours, spends time with his daughter and wife, puts the baby down for a nap, hops online for two hours after 1 p.m., then for two more hours in the evening.

He has been teaching for Olympus High for 20 months.

Not only can he work at his own pace, but so can his students.

Olympus High School, online at www.olympushighschool.net, is a private school operated out of Bellingham, and 11-month full-time tuition is $1,900.

It was founded by Apollo Group, which also founded University of Phoenix — an institution with a 20-year tradition of providing education online.

It is a branch of the Insight Schools at www.insightwa.net.

Insight School of Washington, which operates through the Quillayute Valley School District in Forks, is a public high school.
